Objective:To investigate the effects of a new modified supra-omohyoid neck dissection (MSOHND) and classical supra-omohyoid neck dissection(CSOHND) on quality of life (QOL) of the patients with clinically negative neck of oral squamous cell carcinoma.Methods114cN0patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma were entered in to the study. Supra-omohyoid neck dissection was performed to remove the lymphatic tissue of level Ⅰ, Ⅱ, and Ⅲ. The operation duration and shoulder function were recorded. UW-QOL questionnaire was used to evaluate QOL of different groups. Results The average operation duration in group MSOHND and group CSOHND were126.4±10.7min and105.2±8.2min (P<0.01). Twenty six percent and twenty three percent of the cN0neck were proved positive pathologically for MSOHND group and CSOHND group. Average total score of QOL of group MSOHND and group CSOHND were627.76±177.64and566.19±190.86respectively.(P>0.01). All patients were followed up for one year and only one of them had neck recurrencel. Conclusions:MSOHND can improve quality of life for patients with clinically negative neck of oral squamous cell carcinoma.(7pictures,6tables,82references)...
