Objective:To compare the outcomes of the patients with oral squamous carcinoma in cN0 stage after different methods of neck dissection in order to provide some useful references for the treatment of cN0 patients. Methods: All the 107 patients who were diagnosed as oral squamous carcinoma in Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University were reviewed. The outcomes of the patients who received supraomohyoid neck dissection (SHND) and modified radical neck dissection (MRND) have been investigated and researched with statistic analysis. A few factors were considered such as gender, age, the time between the onset of disease and the operation, the primary position of the carcinoma, the grade of carcinoma's differentiation, the clinical stage, the method of neck dissection, whether receiving radiotherapy or not after operation. The outcomes of SHND and MRND were estimated by comparing the survival rates, recurrence rates and the degrees of functional recovery. Results: It has been proved that the survival rates is only closely related with the clinical stages but has no significant statistic relations with all the other factors referred to before. Conclusions: The difference of outcomes between SHND and MRND is not statistically significant. So the method of SHND with much less trauma is recommended rather than MRND.
