Objective: To investigate the current situation of critical thinkingability of head nurses from4grade-three-and-first-class hospitals inShijiazhuang and probe into its influencing factors, so as to providerecommendations for improving head nurses’critical thinking ability andto offer reference frame for the clinical training of head nurses’ criticalthinking ability and the selection of nursing manager group. Methods: This is a descriptive study. By convenience sampling (forthe collaborative relationship),239head nurses from four grade-three-and-first-class hospitals in Shijiazhuang were investigated with thequestionnaires, including the basic information, the Critical ThinkingDisposition Inventory-Chinese Version (CTDI-CV) and the EysenckPersonality Questionnaire (EPQ). The data were processed and analyzedby SPSS13.0. The statistical analyses included Statistical description,T-test, analysis of variance, parametric test, Spearman rank correlation,Logistic regression. Two-tailed test was applied (α=0.05).Results:1A total of252copies of the questionnaires were issued,239copiesof questionnaires recycled effectively. The effective recovery rate was94.84%.2The total score of239head nurses’ critical thinking was(303.94±23.09),84.94%of whom reached a positive level(≥280points)and only2.09%had strong critical thinking ability(≥350points). Themean scores on seven subscales were higher than40points. The meanscore on Inquisitiveness was higher, while the mean score ontruth-seeking was lower. 3The differences of scores on self-confidence had statisticalsignificance among head nurses with different ages and professional titles(P<0.05). The group younger than or equal to35years old had thehighest score on self-confidence. The score on self-confidence increasedin proportion to head nurses’ professional titles.4There were differences in the total score, truth-seeking,systematicity, analyticity, open-mindness, self-confidence andinquisitiveness between head nurses thinking critical thinking necessaryand others (P<0.05).5There were differences in the total score, truth-seeking,systematicity and open-mindness between head nurses whom had heardabout critical thinking and others (P<0.05).6There were differences in the total score, systematicityopen-mindness, truth-seeking, and self-confidence between head nurseswhom had studied critical thinking and others (P<0.05).7There were differences in the total score, open-mindness,systematicity, analyticity, self-confidence and inquisitiveness among headnurses with different varieties of ways of seeking professionalinformation (P<0.05).The group using more than or equal to4methodsof seeking professional information had a higher score than the other.8There were differences in the total score, systematicity,self-confidence and inquisitiveness among head nurses with differentreading time (P<0.05). The group reading more than or equal to4hoursper week had a higher score than the other.9There were differences in the total score, truth-seeking,systematicity, self-confidence, open-mindness and inquisitivenessamong head nurses with different varieties of readings (P<0.05).Thegroup reading more than or equal to3varieties of readings had thehighest score.10Results of Spearman rank correlation analysis showed that Edimension of personality was positively related with the total score, truth-seeking, analyticity, open-mindness, self-confidence, systematicity, inquisitiveness (P<0.05). N dimension and P dimension of personalitywere negatively related with the total score, truth-seeking and maturity (P<0.05). N dimension of personality was also negatively related withsystematicity (P<0.05).L dimension of personality was positively relatedwith systematicity (P<0.05).11Results of binary logistic regression analysis showed that theinfluencing factors of critical thinking ability of head nurses includedattitude towards critical thinking, E dimension of personality and Ndimension of personality. All of the factors were what maked head nurses’critical thinking ability reach a positive level except N dimension ofpersonality.Conclusions:1Although critical thinking ability of head nurses fromgrade-3-and-first-class hospitals in Shijiazhuang is positive, there are stillmiles to strong standard critical thinking ability. Head nurses are strong ininquisitiveness, but weak in truth-seeking, which should be strengthened.2Promoting of professional titles, knowing and learning of criticalthinking and emphasis on the effect of critical thinking in nursingcontribute to improving the head nurses’ critical thinking ability.3Varieties of ways of obtaining professional information, readingtime and varieties of readings affect head nurse’s critical thinking ability.4Head nurses’ personality affects their critical thinking ability.5The major influencing factors of critical thinking ability of headnurses mainly include attitude towards critical thinking and personality.
