"Jili"(Tribulus terrestris L.) is a traditional Chinese Medicine, belonging to the family Zygophylianceae. The aerial part, also called "Jili-miao", consists of stems and leaves of Tri-bulus terrestris L. It originated from "Compendium of Materia Medica" and has been widely used in China to treat wind-heat, pruritus, swelling, etc, in addition to diuretic in India. And besides stems and leaves it is known that the roots, fruits and flowers of the plant can be used as medicine parts. So Jili is famous as "Effective Medicine of Herbs" in China. The major chemical constituents are saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids and so on. Modern pharmacological study showed that saponins and flavonoids are mainly active element, which can improve cardiovascular disease, senility, diabetes and include enhancing sexual function, etc. In this paper, the aerial part of Tribulus terrestris L. was researched. And the study includes chemical components and quality study.Firstly, we summed up pertinent literatures on the chemical constituents and pharmaco-logic action of Tribulus terrestris L. In the paper, steroid saponins was classified in detail.Secondly, by means of chemical methods and materials,12compounds were isolated from EtOH-H2O extract of stems and leaves of Tribulus terrestris L. Chemical methods in-clude extraction, thin layer chromatography (TLC), liquid chromatography (LC), DAD full wave scanning, color reaction, mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum (NMR), etc. Chemical materials include macroporous resin (D101), MCI gel, C18gel, Sephadex LH-20, and other chemical reagent, etc.8compounds structures were identified as3’,3’-dimethoxy-4’-hydroxyacetophenone-4’-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (JL-1),(3’,3’-dimethoxy-4’-hydroxyacetophenone-4’-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (JL-2), isorhamne-tin-3-O-β-D-glucoside-7-O-β-D-glucoside (JL-3), quercetin-3-O-β-D-gentiobioside (JL-4), isoorientin (JL-5), kaempferol-3-O-β-D-gentiobioside-7-O-D-glucoside (JL-6), kaempfe-rol-3-O-β-D-gentiobioside-7-O-D-glucoside (JL-7), Terrestrinone A2(JL-8), respectively.Thirdly, literatures show that quercetin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin consist of the prime mother nucleus of flavonoids from Tribulus terrestris L.. So, we established a method based on acid hydrolysis by means of HPLC to determine quercetin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin simply, accurately and steadily. The result showed the calibration cueve of flavonoids are li-near at rangs of1.76~44.00, 0.8128~10.1600, 0.55~13.75μg/ml with regression equations, Y=74906X-64345R2=0.9999, Y=74324X-40391R2=0.9993, Y=69020X-30737R2=0.9996, respectively. This method is accepted to determine the samples of Tribulus terrestris L., which were formed by some process of water-alcohol extraction and macroporous resin (D101) iso-lation. The result shows that30%alcohol-soluble can get a yield of96%total flavonoids.
