ObjectivesWe observed the changes in serum levels of amino-terminal prehormone brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and soluble toll-like receptor-2(sST2) in senile heart failure (SHF) and investigated the relationship between myocardial irritating markers sST2and NT-proBNP and heart function, and therefore provided information on diagnosis and prognosis in SHF.Methods1. Fifty patients with age of over60years old from Geriatrics Department in Yuncheng Centre Hospital were enrolled into heart failure group measured by Framingham criteria and further divided into three subgroups:16patients in New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification Ⅱ;20patients in NYHA Ⅲ; and14patients in NYHA Ⅳ. Thirty patients were enrolled into control group.2. Heart function was assessed by clinical presentation and sign combined with echocardiography and chest X-ray.3. Patients were excluded with acute myocardial infarction, severe liver and renal dysfunction, lung embolism, respiratory failure, and tumor.4. Age and sex were recorded and blood samples were taken at emergency.5. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure NT-proBNP (Automatic analysis system by Beijing Lepu Medical Ltd.) and sST2(Shanghai Xinyu Biotechnology Ltd. by China/America/Germany).Results1. There was statistically significant difference in both NT-proBNP and sST2between control group and heart failure group(P<0.01). Both NT-proBNP and sST2were higher in heart failure group than control group.2. Age in different heart function groups showed P=0.5, therefore there was no significant difference in age distribution in different heart function groups.3. Compared with three heart function groups, NT-proBNP was found highest in NYHA Ⅳ group, middle in NYHA Ⅲ group, and lowest in NYHA Ⅱ group. sST2appeared highest in NYHA Ⅳ, middle in NYHA Ⅲ, and lowest in NYHA Ⅱ.4. There was a positive correlation between serum sST2and NT-proBNP (rs=0.810).Conclusions1. Serum sST2and NT-proBNP showed remarkable increases in hear failure group and can be used to evaluate heart failure patient with different heart function.2. The elevated serum levels of NT-proBNP and sST2correlated positively with degrees of heart failure.3. Serum sST2was a new biomarker for diagnosis of heart failure and showed a positive correlation with NT-proBNP. sST2combined with NT-proBNP is a supplemental means for diagnosis of heart failure.
