Anti-vascular dementia effects of LST, which is mainly about anti-cerebral ischemia and hypoxic, and the mechanism of it were preliminarily studied in this paper. The results indicated that LST can prolong survival time and survival rate in BACCO which can induce whole brain ischemia and hypoxia of mice. LST also extended the persistent time of gasping of mice in acute ischemia and hypoxia on mice. The increase of brain water content and the content of malonic aldehyde (MDA) were significantly prevented by administration of LST in the cerebrum of rats performed BCCAO. LST treatment improved the neurological functions in global cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. The loss of neurons from the pyramidal layer of the CA1 region and cerebral cortex caused by global IR injury was attenuated with LST. LST increased the time spent swimming and distance of swimming path in the target quadrant during 90s in probe test of Morris water maze task, in working memory test in rats performed permanent occlusion of bilateral carotid common artery (BCCAO). LST prevented the nerve cell from the ischemic damages on the basis of pathology. LST is no functions in test of excitability of central nervous system (CNS). LST can deduce the death of PC12 cell in SNP and Glu model, which function is relation with its density.Summarizing all the experimental results, LST showed acute and chronic anti-brain ischemia and hypoxia. The mechanism maybe involved inhibiting water content of brain, anti- neurotoxicity of excitatory amino acids, inhibiting activity of Inos, deducing content of NO, and inhibiting oxygen free radical reaction.
