Nowadays, the deeper communication and cooperation in politics, economy and others between China and other countries highlights the importance of legal translation. However, a Chinese legal document often has different English versions with unsatisfactory quality, which may engender confusion and misunderstanding. So, we are trying to analyze it and attempt to offer some translation skills for better translation. To analyze its causes and improve C-E legal translation, this thesis chooses Contract Law of the People s Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as "CLPRC") as a case study, tentatively making a contrastive study of its English versions. This thesis, based on "Functional Equivalence", firstly tries to elucidate differences in lexical, syntactic and stylistic aspects between legal Chinese and English, based on two English versions of CLPRC; Secondly, it attempts to contrastively analyze these two English versions, in order to reveal problems in these three aspects arising from the practical C-E translation of legal documents; Thirdly, it tries to give some suggestions on how to well perform such translation, like "transposition","modulation" and "expansion"; Finally, this thesis ends with a summary of two main findings as follows:1. The features of English legal documents include "common words with uncommon meanings" and "frequent use of passive voice", etc.2. The problems of C-E translation of legal documents include "mistranslation of legal terminology" and "abusive use of common sentence pattern"...
