Nowadays with the new tendency of globalization, more and more economical activities have been carried out, and much attention has been paid to the translation practice, in which legal translation has stood out recent years in China. Vagueness as one of the intrinsic characteristics of language is a prevalent phenomenon in legal documents. Despite the fact that precision and clarity are pursued in legalese, it is impossible to eliminate vagueness in legal documents.The thesis starts from vague language in legal documents, and then attempts to conduct studies on vague language in legal documents. Based on close investigation, the thesis specifically focuses on the research of vague language in Contract Law of the People’s Republic of China (CLPRC), identifies the functions of vague language in CLPRC. The vague language in it has particular lexical and grammatical features, and the vague language can classify it into three types:vague additive, vague concepts, and vague implicature. Moreover, in accordance with the previous analysis, the thesis carries on research on the translation of vague language in CLPRC and finds the enlightenment to translator and translation. The translator should improve bilingual competence, master translation abilities and expand legal knowledge.
