In the thesis, the author mainly discusses the children’s literature’sEnglish-Chinese translation and gives a specific introduction of the translation ofchildren’s literature under the guidance of the interpretive theory of translation by thecomparative study of the two Chinese versions of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.Children’s literature is one of the important parts in literature, which plays asignificant role in the formation of children’s philosophy and their views of the world.In the booming market of the literary works, the children’s literature is quite deficient.There are some issues in the theory and practice of the children’s literature translation.With regard to the translation of the children’s literature, it is hard for a translatorto translate it well only using his linguistic knowledge. The translator must havesystematic world knowledge, for example, the knowledge of the children, the originalwork or the original author and so on. Only having both linguistic knowledge andworld knowledge can the translator make his translated works have communicationfunction. For this reason, under the guidance of the interpretive theory of translation,the thesis draws a conclusion that the translator must utilize “Cognitive Inputs” and“Sense Equivalence” in the process of the children’s literature translation through asystematic study of the children’s literature and its translation. And then, the authorwill show how to translate the children’s literature under the guidance of theinterpretive theory of translation with full and accurate examples.The thesis is divided into five parts:The first chapter is introduction, which consists of the significance of the study,the aim of the study and the structure of the thesis.The second chapter is about children’s literature and the translation of thechildren’s literature. The author attempts to give a comprehensive discussion,including the concept of the children’s literature, the characteristics of the children’sliterature, the function of the children’s literature, and children’s literature translationin China and its insufficiency.The third chapter is the presentation of the interpretive theory of translation, which includes the establishment and development of the interpretive theory oftranslation, the statement of the interpretive theory of translation.The fourth chapter is the center of the thesis. Firstly, the author introduces theoriginal work of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its writer Mark Twain in brief.Then, the author demonstrates the feasibility of the interpretive theory of translation inthe children’s literature translation through a comparative case study of the twoChinese versions of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer from the aspects of “CognitiveInputs” and “Sense Equivalence”.The last chapter is the conclusion of the thesis. The author summarizes the majorfindings and the limitations of the thesis.The thesis mainly attempts to arouse more scholars and translators to focus thechildren’s literature translation, and also make a little contribution to the theory of thetranslation of the children’s literature.
