Chinese children’s literature should attribute its development to translation from the very beginning. And as an important part of children’s literature, the comic strips have obtained so much benefit that the past twenty years has seen a swelling growth in children’s literature market. However, compared to the soaring amount of translated works, the research on the comic strips’ translation hasn’t drawn enough attention of the scholars.Peter Newmark, as one of the most celebrated translation theorists, has been honored for his semantic translation and communicative translation theory, which are respectively applied to translation of different text types. Children’s comic strips, with their humorous languages, lively illustrations, abundant cultural elements, and distinctive features endowed by the authors, have complex text types and therefore require different methods of translation.This paper is a review on the author’s translation of American popular comic strips Big Nate Makes the Grade. By analyzing the text types of the original text, I’d like to try to reexamine the appropriateness of her translation according to Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory, and in doing so, I hope that I can find the proper application of the theory in the translation of comic strips.
