With the development of educational reform and quality education, it is obviouslydifficult for the traditional classroom teaching mode to adapt to the demands of the times. Theconcept of learner-centered has been accepted by most educators; people pay increasinglyattention to the abilities of making students learn how to learn and training students to solveproblems. In December2003, College English Curriculum Requirements (Implementation)issued by Ministry of Education explicitly pointed out that the goal of college Englishteaching is to cultivate students’ comprehensive ability of using the language, especially theability of listening and speaking to ensure their effective communications in the future.Meanwhile, strengthening students’ autonomous learning skills and improving the overallcultural qualities that adapt to the economic development of our country and the need ofinternational communication. Language learning is the process of gradually realizing theproblems and difficulties and gradually finding solutions to the problems and difficulties andfinally solving the problems. So, how do the college English teachers make learner-centered?How do they promote the students eventually becoming life-long learners and efficientthinkers while teaching the language knowledge? The mediation theory is the core of thesocial interactioniam, so the theory has an important guiding sense to teachers how to teach.As one of the schools of modern psychology, social interactionism combined with part of theview of the humanism and the constructivism. Humanism values and respects the individualposition of learners, and constructivism also stresses the learners are the main body of thecognition and the learners positively construct the understanding of the things. But thisconstruction happens in the process of interaction with others; social interactionsimemphasizes the influence of social environment to learning and thinks children born into theworld of communication, learning and developing are happening in their interaction withothers. Thus the mediation theory plays a crucial role in college English teaching.This thesis took the Feuerstein’s mediation as guiding theory, discussed the theoreticalbasis of the theory, and introduced the important features of the theory. On the basis ofquestionnaire survey of15college English teachers and155non-English major students inLiaoning University of Technology, the author analyzed the recognition of the mediation roleof college English teachers in classroom and the application of the theory in college Englishteaching practice. And then the author put forward views and suggestions on how to play theteacher’s mediation role.
