On Interpreter’s Mediating Role In Business Negotiation

In any contacting procedure between countries, cultures and individuals, mediation as a traditional solution or social activity which is to solve disputes or disagreements, widely exists in every aspect of human society. Mediation is an agreement-achieving effort conducted by the third party who provides compromising advice or suggestions to deepen the communication and understanding of the two parties to peacefully solve the disputes or disagreements. The third party is always called mediation party.In the business negotiation meeting where the writer conducted the role as both an interpreter, the foreign party comes from the Kors Plastic Company, Texas, the U.S.,5 persons in all; the Chinese party is 6 senior executives from LeiKangle Group. In the business negotiation meeting, the interpreter conducted her role more than an airfone which mechanically translating one-party talking into another language, but firstly deverbalizing the original language and then interpreting it in another foreign language in the complex procedure of translation, so her role is also a mediator. In the mediation in the business negotiation meeting, the purpose is to achieve the business purpose, which is to realize the greatest financial interests through deepening the negotiation and gaming.It takes two steps to realize mediation, the first of which is "to provide information and accelerate communication", of second of which is "to provide solutions". The factors influencing mediator’s mediation are the four as following:the translator’s purpose of translating, how the translator treats translating itself, the understanding of the social importance of the original text, how the translator thinks of the translation text readers/ listeners.In the business negotiation conference consecutive interpretation, it is not only necessary for the interpreter to prepare the relating material but also necessary for her to have a precise understanding of the purpose of interpreting and the nature of the interpreting, to react swiftly react to the social importance of the original language as well as to take into consideration of the receivers’ understanding ability. Through the interpretation practice conducted in the LeiKangle Group in August,2015, the writer would like to point out the most widely adopted means to realize mediation through summarizing the several factors influencing the conference consecutive interpreting to offer other interpreters experience and advice.
