Gossip is a vital thread in human social interaction. As a type of instructed learning, gossip is a way to learn socially-relevant information about other people’s character or personality without having to directly experience their triumphs and misadventures. Gossip is functional, whether delicious or destructive. It provides human beings with information about others in the absence of direct experience, allowing us to live in very large groups. It is believed that gossip was important for social cohesion during the course of human evolution. But to verify the research by the empirical method from the perspective of perception of its impact on our vision. There are two experiments in current research. Experiment one utilized the binocular rivalry paradigm, participants were presented with structurally neutral faces that were paired with descriptions of behaviors. Participants then proceeded directly to the binocular rivalry task where a mirror stereoscope was used to create binocular rivalry conditions. Check their duration of faces and houses, to investigate the impact of gossip on Chineses. Experiment two also utilized the binocular rivalry paradigm, investigate the impact of our vision of social cognition, which has two important dimensions—warmth and competence. In order to examine the subjects on the perception of the judge of that dimension which is in a dominant position. Results of experiment one showed that the dominant time of faces is significantly longer than the house. Comparing to the dominant time of face which is paired with non-social statement, the dominant time of face which is paired with social statement is significantly longer. Structurally neutral faces previously paired with gossip of negative behaviors were selected for consciousness and dominated in visual awareness significantly longer than did all other neutral faces, including novel neutral faces that were presented for the first time during binocular rivalry. Results of experiment two showed that the dominant time of faces which on dimension of warmth is significantly longer than the dominant time of faces which on dimension of competence. On dimension of warmth, structurally neutral faces previously paired with gossip of negative evaluation were selected for consciousness and dominated in visual awareness significantly longer than did structurally neutral faces paired with gossip of positive evaluation. structurally neutral faces paired with gossip of positive evaluation were selected for consciousness and dominated in visual awareness significantly longer than did structurally neutral faces paired with gossip of neutral evaluation. On dimension of competence, structurally neutral faces previously paired with gossip of negative behaviors were selected for consciousness and dominated in visual awareness significantly longer than did all other neutral faces. These results showed that gossip as a kind of language information also have very important impact on our visual perception. Just knowing gossip about someone, we could make a evaluation. It has become a way to view things, perceive realities, and determine how do we develop and interact with others in this society.
