The Role Of Yang Longyou In<Tao Hua Shan>

Yang Longyou, as an important character in Peach Blossom Fan, is a personalized figure created by Kung Shang-jen based on Yang Longyou, a historical personage in late Ming Dynasty. This thesis aims to study the character Yang Longyou in Peach Blossom Fan and to explore into Kung Shang-jen’s shaping of this very character, combining with historical materials of Yang Longyou (the historical personage).This thesis consists of three parts:introduction, body and conclusion. The body part is divided into two chapters:Chapter1mainly focuses on the historical personage Yang Longyou. Through digging into Yang Longyou’s family background, life stories, friends, works of poetry and painting, I obtained a brief understanding of Yang. Furthermore, after reading historical data and other people’s poetries and proses, I acquired my own evaluation of Yang:an outstanding scholar, a distinguished painter and a patriotic national hero.Chapter2aims to study the image of Yang Longyou in Peach Blossom Fan. Firstly, based on my understanding of Yang’s image in the play, and with historical data when Kung Shangjen produced Peach Blossom Fan and Kung’s own understanding of the historical personage Yang Longyou, I explored into the shaping of Yang’s image in Peach Blossom Fan. Secondly, I differentiate the keynote of Peach Blossom Fan and further analyzed the causes of Kung Shangjen’s complex thoughts and the impact of his complicated thoughts on the shaping of Yang Longyou in Peach Blossom Fan.
