The paper has a dynamic and systematic research on Jing character in Yuan Opera from the perspective of traditional opera role. As the origins and locus of Jing character for clues, depending on performance, the art features and the cultural connotation of Jing character in the text, this paper has an comprehensive and scientific research on Jing character in Yuan Opera from the script and the performance of stag. The paper is divided into five parts.The first part is introduction. It has a brief overview on the background of this paper, the significance of the topic, application value and the present situation of the research.The second part introduces the origin of Jing character in Yuan Opera. Firstly, it explains the name of Jing character. Secondly, it sums up the relevant research results of the forerunners and scholars and generalizes the source of Jing character in Yuan opera as nine basic views. Finally, the process of its formation is divided into three stages:the gestation period of Gu You, the period of Can Jun and the formative period of Fu Jing and Jing in Song and Yuan Opera.The third part presents Jing role’s type of character and cultural connotation. Referring philology, literary theory and some drama theories, using statistical and comparative methods, this chapter divides the characters of Jing into three types: negative character with poor quality, people with foolish and sluggish mind and people with clever eloquent and intelligent mind and then has a comprehensive elaboration on cultural connotation of Jing character.The forth part presents the stage artistic effect of Jing character. Firstly, the paper has a brief expound on the buffoonery and it is classified by taxonomy. Secondly, the chapter discusses Jing’s cantata and analyses the funny effect of cantata with combination of musicology. Thirdly, base on Yuan Opera text, the paper presents the face makeup and costumes of Jing character and discusses the stage performance effect of Jing using drama aesthetics and literary theory. Finally, the paper discusses the rich connotation of Chinese culture with its unique stage stylized performance and its strong comedic colorfulness in witty and funny performance.In the last part, the paper summarizes the intention, represents the artistic and cultural function of Jing character in Yuan opera and the evolution of the development of future generations.
