It’s beyond doubt that the Internet, with its potential functions, has a great impacton the social culture. With the rapid development of Internet and the wide applicationof computers, netspeak (Internet language), as a new emerging language phenomenon, has come into being. As an aid for communication, people use this special languageform to communicate with each other, and at the same time new terms andvocabularies of netspeak are coined from time to time. Although some of the newforms are considered to be incompatible with the traditional rules of grammar, they arestill applied in our daily life for the characteristics of economy and convenience inwritten symbols, which has attracted widespread attention of people in many fields.First, the thesis presents a detail overview of the current research on netspeak bothat home and abroad, focusing on reviewing the presenting and classificationmechanism of netspeak. Second, on the basis of past research, a new method for theclassification of the unconventional forms of netspeak is proposed. Through summingup a large amount of fresh corpus of higher using frequency and best embodiednetspeak’s features, the network buzzwords can be grouped into three categories:pictographic class, ideographic class and phonographic class in accordance withtraditional character types. Last, based on the new classification, some typicalexamples are investigated to further explore the three types of netspeak symbols.Starting from the character representation, the author focuses on analyzing thegeneration method of pictographic symbols, ideographic symbols and phonographicsymbols, summarizing its formation characteristics, so as to come to the conclusion ofthe study. The research shows that pictographic, ideographic and phonographic principlesare the basis for generation of modern netspeak symbol system. Moreover, thegeneration of these symbols is coupled with the economy and convenience of language. The author hopes that this study may provide a new perspective for future research inthis field.
