As a kind of reference book, encyclopedia is complex in content and wide in relevant ranges. Also, encyclopedia has strict specifications for stylistic rules and layout. In a broad sense, the specifications include rules about articles, illustrations, pictures, reference materials, academic terms, writing format, general technical specification, catalogues, index, reference system, appendix and layout. Therefore, compared with other kind of books or articles, translators need to consider more aspects when doing encyclopedia translation. This thesis is based on the writer’s practice on the translation of one part of an encyclopedia, aiming to explore its stylistic features and translation strategies, hoping to provide suggestions to the translation course of English-Chinese dictionary.This main body of this report is composed of three chapters, together with introduction and conclusion.The first part is introduction, which describes the current situation of translation field especially on the translation of encyclopedia.The second part is the main body that is made up of three chapters:Chapter one is the description of the translation task. In this chapter the author illustrates the background of the translation field as well as the characteristics of the task by analyzing deeply the features of encyclopedia.Chapter two is the description of the translation process which consists of the preparation, translation process and self-proofreading.Chapter three is the analysis of the translation cases. In this chapter four kinds of translation approaches are listed together with the correspondent cases from the translation text of the encyclopedia.The last part is the conclusion. In this part the author made a summary about the problems occurred in the translation process and the author’s inspiration and reflections on the translation cases.
