Contrastive Analysis Of Discourse Marker "Suoyi" And "So"

This thesis is aiming to make a contrastive analysis of Chinese discourse marker "suo yT " and English discourse marker "so", using functional linguistics theories and discussing form pragmatic and social linguistic points.As a branch of pragmatics, analysis of conversational structure is called discourse linguistic in China. Analysis of discourse structure’s main concerns are those structural characteristics in oral talking and writing in daily life. Research in discourse markers is a fundamental part of researching in conversation, it has dynamic functions in verbal conversation. Using of discourse markers makes a difference in coding and decoding lingual information. We discuss the differences of functions of these two discourse markers "suo yT" and "so" in the field of informational organization and verbal behaviour in daily conversation. We collect lingual materials form two famous TV interview. One is hosted by Chen Luyu, and one is<Oprah Winfrey Show>. After collecting linguistic fragment and making transcription, analyzing differences between discourse markers " suo yT " and " so " by using connective rules of turns/formal structure of asking-answering pair/next turn proof method/metadiscourse markers theories/structuralism linguistics, managing to find out diverse functions in textual organizing function/contextual adaption function/affective communication function and so on. The whole thesis is consist of five chapters.In chapter one, the introduction consists in the objects for examining, the significance of the research, the range of argument, the approach of analyzing, the background of related theories and the explanation of the corpora’s origin.Chapter two is mainly about the analysis of discourse marker " suo yT ". First, showing the history of using " suo yT", dating back to the property/usage and function in ancient Chinese and mandarin. Second, describing phonetic characteristics/syntactic properties and procedural meaning functions.Chapter three is about discussion of pragmatical functions of discourse marker "so". The first part is listing different properties and functions of "so" in modern English, then describing linguistic functions of discourse marker "so" Chapter four is a conclusive part. Making a chart by integrating all researching results reduction, so that we can have a visualized image of differences between discourse markers "suo yT " and "so". In the end, we summarize the achievements/advantages and disadvantages of this thesis, hoping it can make a contribution to interviewing skills and instructional functions in second language teaching field.
