The Influence Of Listening Styles And Tolerance Of Ambiguity On Passage Listening Comprehension Performance And Cognitive Fatigue

Listening is a kind of fundamental language skill which Plays an important role in Englishstudy,and it is the important Part of the daily communication activities.While,for most Chinese students,Ittends to be the Part which is ignored.At Present, most research-es in this domain are about the listeningstrategies, English listening teaching method and listening anxiety. Few studies have researched thelistening style and the level of tolerance of ambiguity,let alone on cognitive fatigue which generates in theProcess of listening comprehension. Therefore,The aim of this research is to make up for these shortfalls,and try to study the effect of the Present students’ listening styles and tolerance of ambiguity on Passagelistening comprehension Performance and cognitive fatigue.According to the Practice of College English listening comprehension, this study selected thestudents whose major are both arts and Science as the Participants. And in this study we used3×3between-subject design.Independent variable is listening style and level of tolerance of ambiguity.Dependent variable listening comprehension score and the degree of cognitive fatigue,and then we talkabout the effect of listening styles and tolerance of ambiguity on Passage listening comprehensionPerformance and cognitive fatigue.Through the study of the experiment, we got some conclusions as following:First, for the subjects who belong to the low level of the tolerance of ambiguity,They standshigher level of cognitive fatigue than the high and medium level of the tolerance of ambiguity,and thedifference is significant.Second, for the subjects who belong to analytic listening style,They stands lower level ofcognitive fatigue than the analytic and global listening style,and the difference is significant.Third,For the subjects who belongs to the high level of tolerance of ambiguity,the score oflistening comprehension is better than the other two levels;while,the score of the medium level of thetolerance of ambiguity is better than the low level ones, and the difference is significant.Fourth,For the synthetic listening style, the score of listening comprehension is better than theglobe ones, and the score of the globe listening style is better than the analytic ones, and the difference issignificant. Fifth, There is interaction between listening style and tolerance of ambiguity on the score of the passagelistening comprehension.
