Since the1980s, elements of many of China’s local music, folk songs and opera have been adapted into instrumental music works suitable for theatrical performing, which contributed tremendously to the process of transforming local music into instrumental works. Due to this historical background, there appeared a large number of music works by Pipa with very distinctive music style of China’s Shaanxi Province, and deeply influenced Pipa performing features and methods.Shaanxi Province, with its long history and rich cultural heritage, owns distinctive local music and songs which are rooted from the local environment, dialect, folk customs and culture, etc. This article is to analyze and state the fundamental relationship between music works of Shaanxi style by Pipa and Shaanxi’s local culture. Furthermore, from the perspective of the art of performing, this essay validates the unique value of integrating local music style into instrument performing and also its great importance to China’s overall Pipa performing art through researches on Pipa playing techniques, acoustic features, operating methods, and specialized ways of rendering tunes and rhymes.
