The world has become a "global village" with the progress of globalization. The communication and co-operation between countries are being consolidated and strengthened, especially the education and culture exchange becomes more and more important. In the promotion of both international and domestic background, the cultural and educational exchange between China and foreign countries enters an unprecedentedly prosperous and all-round contact period. Interpreting as a bridge between Chinese and foreign education and culture exchange, is playing a more and more important role.In the past, the research in interpreting is isolated from other disciplinary study, which restrained the study from further developing due to lack of objective academic support. Therefore, studying interpreting from an interdisciplinary perspective is becoming more and more important. Nowadays, the research work on interpretation takes on a multidisciplinary trend from the perspective of psychology, semiology, multicultural communication and cognitive pragmatics, etc. The Cooperative Principle, put forward by H.P. Grice, is a key principle in pragmatics. It is a general principle which all conversational participants should observe. Grice’s Cooperative Principle can not only serve as the fundamental rule guiding the conversational communication, but also can be applied to interpretation activities. However, the Cooperative Principle is not always observed in the practical situations. Interpretation is a sort of task which is with high pressure, dense information, irregular unpredictability and limited time. Therefore, interpreters must face many difficulties and surprises. All of this unpredictability will exert more pressure on the interpreter and will make the interpretation less qualified. Therefore, the interpreters don’t have any other choice but to violate the Cooperative Principle by using some strategies to get more time and ease the time pressure. Thus it is unavoidable and necessary for the interpreters to violate the Cooperative Principle. Moreover, in some cases, the interpreter violates the Cooperative Principle and its four maxims on purpose or for some reason (for example, out of respect or politeness) to give rise to implicature. Therefore, this thesis will combine the Cooperative Principle in pragmatics to study and analyze its application to education and culture exchange in interpretation. The data collection is from the current four liaison interpreting teaching courses, mainly the parts of educational and cultural exchange, which are some real interpreting materials and corresponding materials from media network, all of which are typical. The thesis mainly analyzes the violation of the maxim of quality, the maxim of quantity, the maxim of relation, and the maxim of manner and applies some corresponding tactics to different situations to solve the problems the interpreter faces when he or she has to violate the Cooperative Principle and its four maxims, in order to better guide the practice of interpreting, achieve a higher level of cooperation, and welcome the win-win of China-foreign education and culture exchange. This thesis consists of three parts, a total of five chapters, including the introduction, body and conclusion. In the first part (Chapter1), the author will introduce the research background and significance, research methodology and data collection and structure of the thesis. The second part (Chapters2,3,4) is the main research contents of this thesis. Chapter2is the literature review, which reviews the research situation of interpretation at home and abroad, especially reviews the studies on liaison interpreting and the application of Cooperative Principle to interpreting. Chapter3briefly introduces educational and cultural exchange interpretation, including its definition and characteristics, and the Cooperative Principle, which constructs the theoretical framework of this thesis. Chapter4, the focus of this thesis, studies the typical examples which violate the CP in educational and cultural exchange interpretation and the application of corresponding tactics. At the beginning of this chapter, the interpreters’ violating the CP is proved inevitable by analyzing the objective and subjective reasons and the significance of violating the CP in ECE interpretation. Next, the author mainly analyzes the violation of the maxim of quality, the maxim of quantity, the maxim of relation, and the maxim of manner and applies some corresponding tactics to different situations to solve the problems the interpreter faces when he or she has to violate the CP and its four maxims, which emphasizes the CP not only has theoretical significance in the educational and cultural exchange interpretation, but also has practical guiding significance. The third part (Chapter5) is conclusion, which summarizes the main findings and limitations of this study and gives some suggestions for future study.
