C. S. Lewis created The Chronicles of Narnia in the20thcentury, which wasconstructed in the form of fantasy. Narnia series consist of seven books, among whichThe Last Battle published in1956was awarded the highest honor of British children sliterature Carnegie Medal. The work is not only children s literature forentertainment but also contains profound social meanings. The charm of TheChronicles of Narnia lies in the author s intention to rebuild a idyllic utopian societyin the form of fantasy. The thesis intends to make a thorough study of C. S. LewisThe Chronicles of Narnia through an introduction to the fantastic Narnian world toexplore the author s aim to rebuild an ideal utopian society on the theory ofSecondary World combining the background of the20thcentury and the dystopianliterature. This thesis consists of three parts.Part One gives a brief introduction to C. S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia aswell as literature review.Part Two is the main body which has four chapters. Chapter One is about fantasyliterature, the secondary world theory and utopia. Chapter Two is the description ofthe fantastic Narnian world and the founding of Narnia. Chapter Three is the commenton Narnian world which is an ideal utopian society from the aspects of livingenvironment, the spiritual pursuit and the defence of Narnia. Chapter Four is about theauthor, times of the20thcentury and the author s intention to rebuild a beautifulutopian world in the cruel reality.Part Three is the conclusion. Narnian world is a fantastic secondary world. Theland is a free, idyllic, garden-like land. All creatures in the world enjoy theirhappiness and freedom physically and spiritually and all are equal. Narnian world islike a utopian, idealized society. The author showed the readers such a wonderfulutopian society is to give a response to the background of the20thcentury anddystopian literature which showed the evil side of the world and despair of humanbeings. The work reflects the reality of that society as well as expresses the author sintention of rebuilding an idealized utopian society.
