Since1970’s, code-switching, a highly-systematic linguistic phenomenon, has beenput into different studies conducted by distinguished scholars of various linguistic fields,which has led to a considerable size of important research results. The study of this thesisis based on the stable and dependable theory support to have an evaluation ofChinese-English code-switching used in the discourse of fashion magazines. The presentstudy tends to categorize types, conclude features and discuss functions which includesocial function, pragmatic function in the frame of adaptability theory and function ofregister of the concerned Chinese-English code-switching. On one hand, fashionmagazines, which are closely connected with language development, are the polar of newlanguage trends. On the other hand, fashion magazines cover a rich content which isdescribed with ever-changing ways, particularly, Chinese-English code-switching. Thefollowing is the brief introduction of the whole thesis.According to the concrete content of this thesis, there are six chapters which arearranged to illustrate the introduction of the research on Chinese-English code-switching infashion magazines. The first chapter is designed to introduce the arrangements of the thesis,which includes the brief opening, background of the study, major methodologies for thedata analysis, and the outlines of the whole thesis. The second chapter refers to theliterature review, which provides with enough and reasonable theoretical source for thethesis building. In this chapter, the previous studies of code-switching conducted byscholars from different linguistic fields have been searched and reviewed. The third chapteris linked with the theoretical frame controlling the process of data analysis, which suppliesinsights for the research. The fourth chapter concerns the research methodology and datacollection, which is to offer the detailed steps in evaluating the concerned data, just as thecurtain in front of the waiting performance. The fifth chapter goes into the concrete processof dealing with the collected data-Chinese-English code-switching in the discourse offashion magazines. It is also the illustration of results of the present studies of types,features, functions of Chinese-English code-switching in the discourse of fashionmagazines. The last chapter works as the conclusion of the whole thesis to illustrate thefindings as well as limitations.Above all, the present study attaches attention to the study of Chinese-Englishcode-switching in the discourse of fashion magazines. In terms of findings, theEnglish-Chinese code-switching used in the discourse of fashion magazines fall into letter insertion, word insertion, phrase and clause insertion within insertion code-switching.Among them, word insertion accounts for the largest part. In terms of structure, thetargeted code-switching can be divided into intra-sentential, inter-sentential and tagcode-switching. There are four features of Chinese-English code-switching employed inthe discourse of fashion magazines from the perspective of rhetoric and psycholinguistics.In the frame of sociolinguistics, the employed Chinese-English code-switching hasfunctions of linguistic markedness, culture convergence, and product promotion; theChinese-English code-switching applied in fashion discourse also carries out the functionof linguistic and social adaptation which presents the pragmatic part of such appliedcode-switching. The adaptation is to achieve the satisfaction for communicative needs, forexample, keeping original taste, making expression brief and fashionable. The employedChinese-English code-switching manifests the function of contextual register from theperspective of grammar. The present study, on one hand, is designed to hold the recentdevelopment of language and discover the trend of development; on the other hand, is tomake the study work as the linguistic explanation of Chinese-English code-switchingapplied in fashion magazines.
