Code-switching(CS) refers to the shift from one language or language variety to another in communication. Due to the frequent language contact between China and western countries, CS especially the Chinese-English CS usually occurs in both conversational discourses and written discourses such as newspapers and magazines.Since 1970 s, great contribution on CS has been made in many fields. However, most of the researches are limited in conversational discourses, and the studies on CS of written discourses are few. As for the studies on function of CS in written discourses, they lack a systemic and explainable theory to reflect multifunction of CS. Therefore, on the basis of Poplack's Typology Mode of CS and Metafunction from Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics, this thesis aims to present and analyze the structural types of CS, to search for the frequency distribution of structure, and to explore the metafunction of CS in Chinese fashion magazines.As the combination of globalization and localization, Elle is chosen as the data source. And the author collects all Chinese-English CS in ten issues(No.14-No.23) of Elle published in July-December in 2015 and studies them by both qualitative and quantitative methods. First, the author classifies the types of CS; then the author reveals the frequency distribution of structure by data statistics; At last, the author explores the metafunction of CS so as to disclose the reasons of switching.From the study on the CS of the representative Chinese fashion magazine--Elle, It is suggested that(1) With respect to structure, CS in the data can be classified into intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching and tag switching. And according to the grammatical level, it can be divided into letters, words, phrases and clauses switching. Words contain nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs and so on.(2) In terms of distribution features, it is found that intra-sentential switching and nouns switching take up high percentage in that they are simple and easy to understand.(3) In light of reasons of CS, CS occurs in Chinese fashion magazines because of its ideational metafunction, interpersonal metafuntion and textual metafunction.(4) According to the relationship between structure and metafunction of CS in Chinese fashion magazines, it is suggested that ideational and interpersonal metafunction are mainly embodied in intra-sentential switching, while, textual metafunction mainly performs in tag switching. In addition, nouns are the focus of all metafunctions.This study is carried out from surface to depth by studying the structure to function of CS. So it induces that CS happens in Chinese fashion magazines because of its reasons and features, and the abuse of switching should be avoided. Therefore the implication of this study may give some enlightenment to both the readers and editors of Chinese fashion magazines.
