"The Travel Of Lao Can" With The Shandong Folk Custom

"The Travels of Lao Can" wrote by E Liu has been respected for its exposingcruel and corrupt officials, and also has been listed as one of "four satirical novels" inthe late Qing Dynasty. Meanwhile, as a human relationship novel, with muchdescription of local customs and special scenery it referred to the travels of a quackdoctor who was named by Lao Can so that it reflected the situation of that time andmuch folk of Shandong. In the view of this, the classical novel is definitely valuablefor its description of folk custom. With the primary documents about the folk ortradition of Shandong in the novel and other similar literatures, my article applyingsome theories in the field of folklore aimed at interpreting this novel by a newerperspective and deeper understanding.Besides introduction and conclusion, the main body of the thesis is divided intothree chapters.Chapter one was about the textual research of "Castanets Bass Drum" in thenovel. It involved the description of performance in the Jinan Palace and theprevalence of "Castanets Bass Drum" in the Jinan in the late Qing Dynasty.Chapter two was about the textual research of music and instruments in the novel.It involved the prevalence of several instruments in the Shandong.Chapter three was about the textual research of vessel and vehicle in the novel. Itinvolved the description of the means of transportation by water and land.The novel was created in the late Qing Dynasty when the society and traditionalculture and folk changed drastically. Accordingly, the description of the folk in thenovel became more attractive. The thesis was for the purpose of explore its value orsignificance in the field of literature, folklore and society by text explanation.
