The3rd Asian Beach Games were held in Haiyang from June16to June22,2012. Working as a protocol manager in the Organizing Committee, the author mainlytook charge of the protocol reception work in the Beach Volleyball Venue andundertook the task of translating different genres of materials. The post-relatedresponsibilities include: writing publicity materials about Haiyang and the3rd AsianBeach Games in Chinese and translate them into English in order to distribute them toforeign guests; translating emails between various institutions and organizations, especially those between HABGOC and the OCA, and making arrangementsaccording to the content thereof; making bilingual reception agenda and schedule;providing practical reception service for VIP guests in the Beach Volleyball Venueduring the Games. In the translation process, the main method employed was casestudy. In translating emails, due to different target readers and the administrativestructures, the translation strategy implemented was different. The target readers ofthe publicity materials are mainly foreigners who are expected to know little aboutChinese and Haiyang culture, therefore the main translation strategy employed wasadaptation in which the translator supplemented some background information tothem. The choice of translation strategy for rendering the reception schedule andagenda was influenced by the medium. In the translation process, the Functionalistapproaches and Nord’s model for text analysis have served as the theoretical guidelineand presented many solutions to the translation-related problems. Moreover, thereflections on the problems and the measures against them were presented and thesuggestions on the training of the translators’ competence and MTI teaching andlearning are proposed for the reader’s reference.
