In cognitive linguistics,people are accustomed to use the concept of bodilyexperience to express concept of non-bodily experience.In other words,we areaccustomed to use concrete concept to express abstract concept. The temperatureconcept,which consists of hot,cold,warm and cool,is one of the basest concept andcognitive domain in human life. The reaserch of historical evolution of the meaning oftemperature word plays an important role in reaserch of history of Chinse languageand knowledge of complete picture of vocabulary.The paper discusses historical evolution of the meaning of re,leng,wen,liang,which consists of five chapters,three parts.Part I is Introduction,which explains the reason and significance of selection ofthe topic.Part II include chapter one to chapter four,which investigates the historicalevolution of the meaning of hot,cold,warm,cool from the pre-Qin period to thecontemporary era. The hot word mapped into sixteen categories: disease, plight,mentality,property, power, emotion, scene, traditional opera, time, action, degree,charater, article, spoken language,relation;The clod word mapped into nineteencategories:property, mentality, emotion, disease, manner, power, state, article,charater,scene,hearing,colour,degree,time,spoken language, traditional opera, relation,war,weapon; The warm word mapped into twelve categories: temper, manner,knowledge,voice,colour,disease,life condition, property, mentality,article,sense ofsmell,emotion;The cool word mapped into ten categories: mentality, scene, lifecondition,emotion,time,degree,character,relation, spoken language.Part III is chapter five,which comprise four words in total. Something incommon:all is from concrete to abstract;categories are mostly the same,such asproperty,disease,mentality,emotion, and degree;the congnitive motivation of evolutionis the same for the most part.Difference: the number of category is different.Categories hot and cold maped are maximum.Even if in the same category the deptheach word extended is different.Hot an cold usually are more in-depth.Because hotand cold are extremes in temperature category,more prominent in congnitive schema,which is easy to map to degree category. More cases the sense of hot and coldfollows the change of emotion and mentality.In addition danger anduncomfortableness are the implicature of hot and cold,and so on.These category intowhich four words enter are not identical,but same than different as a whole.
