The Multi-perspective Study Of Temperature Words In Modern Chinese

In cognitive linguistics, as one of basic human cognitive language, temperature words, derivedfrom the concepts of temperature, were very abundant, and were used for expressing much morecomplex conception beyond the temperature sensing domain. Temperature words in modern Chineselanguage were selected as the study hall object in this thesis Based on the principle of linguistic ontemperature words and the theory of cognitive language, we selected all the temperature words frommodern Chinese language and conducted a deeply study about the metaphor and metonymy oftemperature concepts in corpus.This study object of this paper was temperature words in modern Chinese, and wedefined the temperature words which referred to temperature, and temperature-relatedconcepts as well as the abstract conception from the temperature sense word. According todifferent position and function, the temperature words of modern Chinese could be dividedinto basic temperature words and normal temperature words. By examining the voice,structure and properties on these words, we found that most of these words are double syllable,in the voice; and own highly proportion in compound words in the structure, especially in theformal synthesis words; Furthermore, these words had corresponding, ambiguity andcomplexity characteristics.Based on the theory of cognitive linguistics, metaphor and metonymy methods were usedfor cognitive analysis about "chilling" word family,"hot" word family,"warm" word family,and "cool" word family. We found that most of target domain, which were projected by themethods of metaphor in the temperature words of modern Chinese were same. And the rangeof metaphor projection was far wider than metonymy’s, because the latter was only used infew words. On the respect of the number of target domain from the metaphors methods, mostof them were projected by "cold" and "hot" temperature words, but "warm" and "cold" doinversely.There were the rhetoric methods on temperature words in modern Chinese. Most of contrastusage was used in psychological description, which express inner feeling from the another sides.Synaesthesia could connect the sensing of visual, hearing, taste smell and tactile brought bytemperature to enrich the images of feeling. Empathy focused on complex emotion body’s feeling.Analogy parallelism mostly expressed inner well-being by the weather.
