| Nowadays, with the development of society, the integration of China with theglobal community unity is becoming a trend. Increasing number of foreignmovie-television products have flooded into Chinese market and gained popularity.What’s more, the pouring of English movie-television products has made theEnglish movie-television text translation become a hot topic. In order to transmitmessage while handling the cultural factors, translator needs to base on the flexibleuse of translation techniques like amplification, omission, conversion, division and soon. However, there still existed the inconsistence of appraisal resources in actualtranslation practice, which has resulted in the failure of conveying accurateinformation from the source language.Appraisal theory derived from Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG).It is the development and expansion of Halliday’s interpersonal metafunction. Thistheory focuses on all kinds of appraisal resources in the discourse that can becoordinated. Admittedly, although the application of Appraisal theory has attractedmore and more attentions, the actual application practice of movie-television texttranslation as yet under-explored filed is still being an area which calls for moreresearches.This study is taken English movie-television discourse analysis as the startingpoint, analyzed the application value of the Appraisal theory in English affectionalmovie-television text translation, pioneered the application field of Appraisal theory,and found a new perspective for English movie-television text translation to fill thegap.In order to demonstrate the value of Appraisal theory to movie-television texttranslation, this study takes30fragments of classical English affectionalmovie-television text as corpus to make a qualitative and quantitative analysis of theappraisal resources in the fragments of classical English affectional movie-televisionworks. Based on the data analysis, this study makes an interpersonal meaningcomparison between the source text and target text. For the purpose of achieving theinterpersonal meaning equivalent in the translation, this study also explores the factorsthat affect the construction of interpersonal meaning in the process of translation. The study has found that the three subsystems of Appraisal theory are reflected inthe English affectional movie-television text, which including attitude, judgment andappreciation. But the attitude resources show an uneven distribution. So as to performthe emotion of figures, distinct the personalities of characters and understand thetheme, more emotion and judgment resources are used, which gives its translationversion light to the distribution of different appraisal resources. According to theanalysis of the translation, although the existed Chinese version or English versionhave conveyed most of the interpersonal meaning in the re-construction process, therestill existed inconsistence and the lost of partial interpersonal meaning in the targettext due to the lack of attentions to the appraisal resources. Seen in this light, the useof Appraisal theory in the English affectional movie-television text translation willimprove the translation quality. With the facilitative Appraisal analysis, translator canhave a better understanding of the movie-television texts and consciously producemore interpersonal equal translations.Starting from the source text, translation, translator, language culture andmovie-television text features, this study discusses about the factors that may affectthe reconstruction of interpersonal meaning in the process of translation, such as thespecific characteristics of the movie-television text, audience’s instantaneousunderstanding ability, translation purposes and value differences.This study is a frontier field of Systemic Functional Grammar, which will fill inthe blank of Appraisal theory application on English affectional movie-television texttranslation. Its significance lies in:(1) There are theoretical and practical values inAppraisal theory itself. Appraisal theory is a theory that integrated many differentdisciplines, such as linguistics, ethics, aesthetics, psychology, and so on. Likewise, theapplication of Appraisal theory is the enrichment and development of the theory itself.(2) It plays a guiding role in the English-Chinese translation practice to resolve theproblems of lacking the operable appraisal analysis tool in translation theory.Appraisal theory is a discourse analysis-oriented functional linguistic theory with itsfocus on the position of the discourse resources, attitudinal sources and textual stance,which can be used as an analysis tool for translator, thereby improving the overallquality of movie-television text translation. |
