With the development of human society, human study of language is also in constant development and change. But in the rapid development of philosophy and the philosophy of language, rationalism smashes religious fetters, liberates people’s thought, promotes the development of language research, and explores language more scientific and systematic from the angle of natural science and philosophy. Rationalism has played a huge role and impact in the all along. The emergence of Plato’s logos marks the rational world and social rules and also raised the possibility of rational language. Then Humboldt’s linguistic theory appears, opening the understanding of language concept in depth. The advent of Chomsky’s universal grammar marks human language inquiry to hitherto unknown height under rationalism. In a sense, rationalism has deeply influenced the development of notion of language. This thesis, from the rational perspective, using the method of diachronic and comparative research, explores the development of notion of language under rationalism and meaning and effect of the philosophical foundation. This paper contains five chapters. The first chapter introduces the background, research meaning and structure. The second chapter is the literature review, making a simple overview of the research results and the current situation of the basic theory of language philosophy. the third chapter introduces, Plato, Humboldt and Chomsky, three representatives’ the notion of language under rationalism and their philosophy basis of notion of language The fourth chapter discusses the significance of the three notions of language and the significance of their foundation of philosophy of language The fifth chapter draws the conclusion: that the notion of language makes the mutual effect of the philosophy of language, rationalism more objective and systematic, in the combination of diachronic and comparative analysis.. This is a brand-new angle of view that it is to examine the comparison study of notion of language from rationalism, and people take more comprehensive and clear understanding of the notion of language.
