The history of Chinese Fine Art has been presenting a contention of a hundredschools of thought over thousands of years. The style of traditional large impressionisticink landscape has reached a new peak after it got rid of the stale contents and ideas andbrought forth the fresh ones. In the contemporary times, Mr. Gao Huimin, broadenedthe areas by originating a type of painting, which features flowers growing inmountainous regions, and insects and birds. Thereupon, he has filled in the gaps in thehistory of Chinese paintings of flora and birds. The artists of flowers and birds apply theskills of landscape painting to their creation that help to breathe in “Old-fashioned”subjects and breathe out “novel” images of the traditional themes of Chinese paintings.“Plum flower, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum”, known as the “Four Gentlemen”,are taken as the indispensable themes and subjects in Northern Flower and Bird Painting.This thesis starts with analyzing the general ideas about Northern flower and birdpaintings. Probing into the significance of those four subjects of flowers, namely,“Plumflowers, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum”, and analyzing the influence brought bythe skill of free-sketch are presented in the thesis as well. As a conclusion, the spirit offreehand brushwork of landscape paintings of “plum flower, orchid, bamboo andchrysanthemum” plays a pivotal and vital part in the style of Northern Flower and BirdPainting, therefore, which is embodied vividly.
