According to the development of the symbolic formal language of oil painting and its innovation as well as its position and role in the20th century, this thesis discusses the close link between the symbolic formal language in oil painting and artists.Cassirer once said:"man is the animal of creating symbols." This suggests that symbols are generated with the human being’s appearance and the symbol is closely related to human’s activities.Modern art is filled with all sorts of visual symbols which have a close relation with art. When people shift traditional visual pleasure to the confusion of modern spirit in front of the easel, works of art, to great degree, also gradually turn the shock of the soul to the attraction of eyes. Thus we can not help but ask,"apart from a pile of bizarre symbols, what’s still left in modern oil painting art?" This is a question worthy of further thinking. With this question as the starting point, the thesis explores how the artists with symbolic features in the20th century express their own inner personalities, emotions, personal charms and artistic values in the process of creation through the proper handle and application of symbols, based on the research about those typical symbolic formal language of the painters in the20th century mainly emphasizing the change of times, development of culture, libration of characteristics, and release of emotions, etc.
