Higher Vocational Education occupies a vital position in China’s higher education system, it is an important way to promote the popularization of higher education and cultivate high-quality workers and skilled personnel. With the development of the times, private higher vocational education has become an integral part of the cause of socialist higher education, playing an important role in training applied talents and skilled personnel.Practical English Test for Colleges is established to reflect and evaluate the English language proficiency of students after completing college English courses, it is a standardized test. The examination is divided into Level-A and Level-B, Level-A examination is slightly higher than Level-B examination. English level of private vocational college students is generally not high, so the majority of institutions have used Practical English Test for Colleges Level-B to examine students’ English proficiency. The study, backwash of Practical English Test for Colleges Level-B on English Teaching of Fujian Private Higher Vocational Colleges, aims at helping Private Higher Vocational Colleges to improve the quality of English teaching.This study is based on the theory of Alderson and Wall’s (1993) backwash assumptions and Shih’s backwash theory,randomly selected713sophomore from7private higher vocational colleges in Fujian who have completed sophomore English courses and25English teachers from5colleges for the survey,and got relevant information by questionnaires and interviews. The study showed that positive backwash of Practical English Test for Colleges Level-B on English Teaching and learning in Fujian Private Higher Vocational Colleges was greater than negative backwash. The positive backwash of the test to students mainly reflected in consolidating the basic knowledge of English language, increasing their interest、 attitudes、willpower in learning and so on. But the negative backwash reflected in alienating learning objectives, increasing test anxiety and hindering subsequent learning, etc. The positive backwash of the test to teachers mainly reflected in providing instructional feedback, improving teaching effectiveness, mobilizing teaching enthusiasm, etc.The negative backwash reflected in impacting teaching material progress rate, limiting teaching methods, increasing teaching pressure. In view of the the findings, the thesis explored the inspiration of backwash of Practical English Test for Colleges Level-B on the exam itself, teachers, students, administrators, providing reference for the private vocational colleges English Teaching.
