Martial culture has long and profound influence on Chinese culture. And as the brightstar of the Chinese literature, the martial arts fiction is the indispensable part of the Chineseculture. Though the technology has been so highly developed, the translation of the martialarts fiction is rarely done by scholars for its particular genre and the corresponding difficultiesin translation. As the last martial arts fiction of Louis Cha, The Deer and the Cauldron is alsoanother highpoint in Louis Cha’s writing career. In1997, the English translator John Minfordpublished the translation The Deer and the Cauldron, making great contribution to the exportof Chinese culture, and also caused the discussion in the translation circle. As for such aparticular form of literature, John Minford creates a world filled with marital arts culture inEnglish, showing the extensive and profound Chinese culture to the western world.This thesis is composed of5parts. The Introduction gives a brief introduction of themain frame of this thesis; Chapter2introduces the novel Luding Ji and its translation TheDeer and the Cauldron as well as its translator John Minford. As the important part of thisthesis, Chaper3summarizes the variation phenomena in the Deer and the Cauldron whichinclude the explanatory translation phenomena, the translation and writing phenomena, theselective translation phenomena and the translation rearrangement phenomena. What’s more,it also analyzes the phenomena by examples one by one. On the basis of the analysis inChaper3, Chapter4analyzes the reasons for the variation phenomena in the Deer and theCauldron from the perspectives of the entertainment nature, the language and the stylistics ofthis novel. The Conclusion is a summary of this thesis including the achievement and thelimitation of this thesis and also gives some suggestion to the future researchers.
