A Translation Report On The Anecdotes Of Guangzhou

This thesis aims to translate some excerpts of a Chinese book named GuangzhouYiwen (the Anecdotes of Guangzhou). As one of the Series of Books about LingnanCulture, this book mainly introduces the history of Guangzhou. Translating Chineseinto English is a difficult task but with huge significance, as this translation can helpforeigners get a better understanding of Chinese history and culture, what’s more, italso corresponds with the Strategy of Chinese Culture Undergoing Globalization. It isfull of significance but with high obstacle. During then process of translating, theauthor encountered various difficulties. With the instruction from the tutor, the writerapplied relevance theory and subjectivity, tried to give his own answers.The wide diversity between China and the West in philosophy, economicstructure and geographic environment cause the difference in language system andexpressing style. The difference reflects in sentence order, language structure, rhetoricand morphology between English and Chinese. Couplet as a unique literary form ofChinese culture demonstrates the diversity more clearly. As a special artistic form thatsuits both refined and popular taste, couplet has enjoyed a long history in China. It isdistinguished from other literature styles for its unique form. The translation ofcouplet would enable the foreigner to get a better appreciation of Chinese culture. inthis translation report, the translator briefly introduced the couplets appearing in thesource text and made a detailed analysis based on which the author provided his owntranslation version about these couplets.
