From the perspective of cognitive linguistics, the paper makes a contrastivestudy between English and Chinese denominal verbs. Denominal verb is a commonlinguistic phenomenon, both in English and Chinese. It is an innovation of the language. The paper consists of six chapters. The first chapter introduces the basic concept ofdenominal verb, that is, the phenomenon of using nouns as verbs. Then the object, aim andtask of study have been settled. Chapter two is the literature review, in which we make aretrospection of denominal verbs from four perspectives, that is, the perspective ofgrammar, pragmatic, cognitive and contrast. The next chapter discusses the causes ofChinese and English denominal verbs, mainly from three aspects, language factors, pragmatic factors and cognitive factors. And chapter four researches the theoretic basis ofdenominal verbs. Metonymy is the basic cognitive mechanism of denominal verbs, whichplays an essential role in the generation and comprehension of language. During theprocess of using nous as verbs, metonymy and metaphor work together. Chapter fivemakes a contrastive study between English and Chinese denominal verbs. First thestandards of classification are contrasted, mainly Clark&Clark’s and Dirven’s. Both twostandards take syntax, semantic and words into consideration. Then similarities anddifferences between Chinese and English denominal verbs are listed, in which the fourdifferences are paid more attention to. The last chapter is the conclusion part. Itsummarizes the research significance and puts forward the research prospects of the paper. The main characteristic of the paper is that it makes a contrastive study and applies themetonymy theory and metaphor theory to study English and Chinese denominal verbs in adynamic system. The paper aims to make deeper understanding of denominal verbs andcognitive theories of human being.
