The research on the ancient Chinese Initial Consonant Clusters is the difficulty ofthe study of Chinese phonology.Since Joseph Edkins claimed that Initial ConsonantClusters existed in the ancient Chinese over one hundred years ago, many linguists bothat home and abroad show great concerns to it, bringing about a lot of good researchmethods, finding many new study materials, leading to a large number of significantresearch results, and laying a solid foundation for further research. But till today, therehas not been an agreement on Initial Consonant Clusters nether a complete InitialConsonant Clusters System.These factors, such as different written forms, the numberof ranges and different ideas,etc. Indicate that initials ancient Chinese still need to beimproved, but also reveal the deficiencies of some aspects of the study, which weshould pay attention to in the further research.Presently there has been a considerablenumber of articles about Initial Consonant Clusters, however, a lot of articles gotinvolved in un-thoroughness,either in the material, or in the types of compoundconsonant, few scholars have conducted a through research on the Initial ConsonantClusters like Chen Duxiu,Yan Xuequn, Zhengzhang Shangfang. Many articles aboutInitial Consonant Clusters only related to some less controversial ones, there are stillsome materials which have not been used efficiently. While in recent decades, as theunder earthed documents have been found constantly, scholars focused a lot attention onthe study of Initial Consonant Clusters. Taking Guodian Tomb bamboo book as an example, it hasbeen unearthed for less than two decades, but the scholars both at home and abroad haveconducted significant researches on this group of materials, and have written more thanthousands of articles and books. But among those works, most of them are just thereflections of ideology, cultural-psychology ect. At present, only three articles arerelated to the Initial Consonant Clusters reflected by Guodian Chu Tomb bamboo. Learned from the research status of these excavated documents, few articles arerelated to Initial Consonant Clusters, especially to comprehensive study of the InitialConsonant Clusters contained in excavated literature, this thesis is based on thedeficiency of the study, a special research has been conducted on the Initial ConsonantClusters of Guodian Chu Tomb bamboo book.The article begins is an introduction to the study materials, meaning,methods,thinking and some related researches to the Initial Consonant Clusters of Guodian ChuTomb bamboo. It describes the researches and contributions conducted by authorityscholars to the study of the Initial Consonant Clusters chronologically from domesticand international aspects, and then,in accordance with this research, the shortcomingsand research status Of Initial Consonant Clusters of Guodian Chu Bamboo Slips turnedout to be more obviously.The first chapter defines several concepts involved in this thesis. It defines theConnotation and Denotation of the terminology theoretically, such as, Initial ConsonantClusters, Allogeneic word and homophones. In the end, this chapter presented a briefintroduction of this study with reference to the initials system, the history andrelationship between the Ancient initials and the Middle initials, and the wording of thisthesis which should be explained.The second chapter is the main part of this thesis. Analysis will be given on thebasis of abnormal voice about homophones and allogeneic words which reflect theInitial Consonant Clusters in the Guodian Chu Tomb bamboo book. According to thetypes of the Initial Consonant Clusters, there are eight types and twenty-five InitialConsonant Clusters. Finally, some associated scholars and their research fruits will bepresented.The last part is a summary of this thesis. It has Summarized the results andvalues of this study, as well as the shortcomings and requirement of further studies. Itwill be of great importance for further researches and greater achievements in the futurestudies on Initial Consonant Clusters.
