The Great Master Changming’s Practice And Contribution On "Humanistic Buddhism"

Buddhism as one of the world’s three major religions was produced in the sixthcentury BC in India.It was introduced into China in the Han Dynasty. As a result of theevolution of the long-term development, constantly absorbing the essence of traditionalChinese culture.And finally it became Chinese Buddhism within local characteristics.Professional scholars agree that consider from the entire history of Buddhism in China,especially the history of Chinese Buddhism, Chinese Buddhism has two majorinnovations: the first was Zen and the second was Humanistic Buddhism. Since thebeginning of the20th century, Master Taixu began to advocate the HumanisticBuddhism and then Master Yinshun,Lay Zhao Puchu and some monks explored andpractised it further.It had obtained much recognition and been spreaded widely both inBuddhist community and all sectors of society all over the world.Nowadays,it hasbecome a consensus in Buddhist circles and been advanced.Therefore,it was known as‘the most precious wisdom of Buddhism in the20th century’.With the process ofglobalization, modernization and secularization have conducted much rapidly,Humanistic Buddhism is still worth learning and deep thinking.The study of HumanisticBuddhism is one of the top issues in academic world in recent years.The proposal andpractice of Humanistic Buddhism are of great significance for guidancing and reflectingon Buddhism in contemporary society. How to carry forward the fine tradition ofBuddhism deeply of important positive significance for construction and socialdevelopment.The Changming Master was a leading contemporary patriotism senior monk withmuch support and respecte.He combined Buddhist doctrines with his own practicemasterly,cautiously and conscientiously.For the Guiyuan Temple’s development andgrowth in Wuhan City,for promoting the influence of Humanistic Buddhism in HubeiProvince,for leading the development of Humanistic Buddhism adapted for building theharmonious society in Wuhan, all these contained the Changming Master’s efforts.This article is divided into three chapters.The first chapter mainly discusses thecauses,foundation and process of the Humanistic Buddhism both from the historical andsocial environment and their own drawbacks.The second chapter discribes theChangming Master’s active practice of Humanistic Buddhism in details.Finally,I probes the Changming master’s contribution and significance of Humanistic Buddhism. Heexhausted all his life in actively practice of Humanistic Buddhism and gained someachievements. For the reason that the study of his practice of Humanistic Buddhism hasimportant academic value not only for the study of Humanistic Buddhism,but also hasthe reality of the social significance for building the harmonious society.
