Vocabulary teaching is crucial in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of OtherLanguage (TCSOL). Other aspects of teaching such as grammar, phonetics, andculture teaching should be based on vocabulary teaching. Viewing TCSOL textbooksin operation, it is not obvious that most of them put vocabulary in remarkable places, and great efforts were put into gloss which is the most important channel forvocabulary acquisition. Recently, gloss has drawn wide attention in academic field.Gloss in English language is adopted in most TCSOL textbooks, especially in theelementary period. It is beneficial in understanding the meaning of the word andmastering the use of the word, meanwhile, it creates an ideal bridge for learners andpromoted the development of vocabulary teaching. However, there are differences inChinese and English languages. Actually, it is hard to find a word with same meaningand usage in different languages. Meanwhile, factors such as lacking of considerationin compiling textbooks make glosses not desirable. The shortcomings in gloss notonly affect the effect of acquisition, but even create obstacles for acquisition. Thisresearch takes the textbook, Chinese for Beginners, which is widely used andcommonly acknowledged as an example, analyzing problems existing in gloss fromthe theory of error analysis, and then provides some solutions for avoiding negativeeffect of inappropriate gloss from the aspects of textbook compiling, classroomteaching and teachers. Since the evaluation of solutions is seldom, the author tries toverify the effectiveness of solutions proposed in the paper by the means of testingoversea students.
