The history of Chinese drama is about transfer,transform and development in the art of drama.The development of classic drama started from philistinism to elegance first, then to philistinism again. The drama is continuously identified and changed between these two taste tropism:philistinism and elegance. The elegant literature representing nobility, and the vulgar literature representing popular taste, are intertwined and inter-related by different artistic charm. Finally, these two types of literature are concordance with each other externally and inherently. After the May4th cultural movement, the pattern of the elegant literature and vulgar literature are adjusted again, under the influence of background of the times, the liberation of thought and political environment. New novels and new drama take elegant tasks in vulgar manner. The social identity of modern drama expects not only the popularity and applause in great masses of people, but also the educational function of awakening the world, contributing in the anti-imperialist and democratic revolutionary.The show of "Thunderstorm" is outstanding in the new stage of art."Thunderstorm" tells a story of mental crisis and final collapse happened in a bourgeois family with severe feudal.The drama sharply denounces the oppression and destroy on people caused by feudalism and capitalism. It explores the complex and mysterious human nature, intensively expresses the requirements for the liberation of personality and independent."Thunderstorm" become a shining monument of Chinese modern drama with prominent achievement in art and literature.Drama is an art with audience and chorus.The librettist, CAO YU understands the importance of audience to the drama, therefore he chose a art pattern with both elegance and popular. He retained the legendary of the story in the play,and impressed the audience with intense plots by striking one snag after another.The poetic sentiment and aesthetic interest are persisted for librettist, adding the lyricism and sense of art to the works. The aesthetic realm is formed with compatible balance between elegance and popular. Thus a successful experiment is completed in Chinese modern dreama literature.The author of this thesis expects to hold Cao Yu’s personality of creation and style of art, from balances of elegance and vulgarity. The author try to show more consciousness of the researchers during the study and research, using the method from macroscopical angle and fine analysis. The arthur longitudinally discusses the classical drama, thoughts on May4th, and experience of growing up, and laterally compares the elegance and vulgarity in language arts, character configuration and dramatic conflict,etc. With the conclusion of suiting both refined and popular taste, the arthur coordinate completely how Can Yu’s creative psychology effects the style of his works. He interpretates the originality and aesthetic value of Cao Yu’s drama from a new point of view, improves the perspective of aesthetics and the principle of criticism to the research on Cao Yu’s drama.
