About The Generative Process Of Resultative Construction In Modern Chinese

On the basis of the Functional Category Hypothesis of Xiong (2004) and MovementTheory of Control of Hornstein(2004), this thesis poses a new hypothesis, that isthematic role can drive the movement. This hypothesis believe that the thematic roles offunctional categories can drive the movement of D/NP, which fuses the advantages ofboth Category Hypothesis and Movement Theory of Control, points out the powerfulgenerative capacity of functional categories in Modern Chinese, and can also explain thegenerative process of resultative construction in Modern Chinese.At the beginning of this thesis, we described the details of the inside of resultativeconstruction from the perspective of structuralism, such as the syntactic components andthe semantic components. Specifically, we discussed the concept of resultativeconstruction, the categories of V, the categories of R, and the relativation of thearguments. After these, we analysed the semantic roles and semantic orientations of thecomponents of resultative constructions. And then, in chapter3, we discussed thegenerative process of resultative construction from the theoretical perspective. The key isthat we fuse the two theories and put forward our new thinking, i.e. the thematic roles offunctional categories can drive the movement of D/NP. At the end, we elaborated thetheoretical advantages of the new operation.The new operation we put forward is composed by two parts: the functionalcategories decide the choosing of arguments and the assigning of thematic roles, and asthe features, thematic roles can drive the movements of D/NP. The former comes fromthe Functional Category Hypothesis of Xiong Zhongru, and the latter comes fromMovement Theory of Control of Hornstein. With the help of the new operation, we canexplain the generative mechanism of resultative constructions in a rational way, whichcan combine the generative grammar with the study of Modern Chinese better.
