As a Taiwan writer, Bai Xianyong was first introduced to themainland, whose works represented the highest achievements of Taiwan’ novel inthe sixties and seventies of the twentieth century. His novels are well known forshaping the female characters, but a group of male characters that he described alsohave a high artistic level and research value. On male attention and sympathy, thetext of the novel shows a unique description of the loss of the male world. Bydescribing and analyzing the typical male characters, the paper tries to discuss thedifferent states and the causes of their lost spirit, thus revealing the significance oflost spirit of the male world.This paper is divided into six chapters to discuss the loss of the male world inBai Xianyong works. The first chapter briefly introduces the background and theresearch significance, research status at home and abroad, the difficulty in theresearch, innovation and research methods. To take the lost male group in the novelas the object, the second chapter classifies their different status and summaries thecharacteristics of lost spirit of the male protagonist. With the help of Freud’spsychoanalytic method, the third chapter mainly analyzes the form and spiritualconnotation of male loss. Combining the study of Chinese traditional culture andwestern homosexuality under the premise for the reference to the female world, thefourth chapter explores the male world under gender comparison. The fifth chapterdiscusses the art of writing of the lost spirit from three aspects of symbolism, streamof consciousness and the female narrative features. The last part of this papermainly analyzes the cause of the loss of the male world from the three aspects ofpersonal experience, the historical and cultural background as well as their sexualorientation and makes a summary of the whole thesis.The male narrative in Bai Xianyong’s novels presents us a vivid image of themale world, shows that writers comprehensively understands the relationshipbetween men and women. It not only pays attention to the female, but also gives themale world a strong historical and cultural connotation at the same time, being amore humanistic care for men’s world and emitting a unique artistic charm.
