Kahlil Gibran is the famous writer and painter in Lebanon, he left a valuable spiritual wealth for the people of the world. When he was born, Lebanon was in the rule of Ottoman Empire. The ruler was always exploiting Lebanese people. The life of Lebanese people was very difficulty. Gibran and Lebanese people all hated the rulers of Ottoman Empire. So when Gibran was a child the rebellious spirit had appeared in his heart. When he went to America, he was affected by the ideas of modernist literature. His rebellious spirit enhanced by the rebellious spirit of modernist literature. The rebellious spirit is one condition of the production of the image of madman. The second condition is the loneliness of Gibran. Between1901and1902, Gibran’s three family numbers were died. Gibran was very sad and lonely. The girls he loved left him several years later. Gibran became more lonely. Later Gibran was affected by Superman theory of Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche. Superman dares to deny religious beliefs and the old moral culture. He dares to affirm self-worth. The image of madman was created by Gibran in these conditions. The formation of the image of madman includes three stages. They are the beginning stage, the development stage and the established stage. The representative figure in beginning stage is John in Madman John and Khalil in Apostate Khalil. Because they revealed clergyman’s true color they were vilified the madman. The representative figure in development state is the madman in Madman. Because the madman torns off the hypocritical mask and people see him as a madman. The representative figures in established stage are the mad god, gravedigger, Yusuf·Fahri in the work of Storm. They are not only dare to reveal the ugly reality but also affirm self-worth. They are full of rebellion and madness. The image of madman’s main characters are rebellious, sober, lonely and free. The madman sees the ugly human nature and reality. So the other people treat him as a mad. But he is the most sober person in the world. Nobody understands him and makes friends with him, so the madman is lonely. However the madman can do whatever he wants because of the loneness. So he is also free.
