Zhang Yawen is known as one of the most outstanding female documentarywriters in modern era. Ever since the completion of the masterpiece Hard Russia, shecontinued to write other literary works like Blue Shield Action, Walking through theSadness, The Outcry of Life, etc. What’s more, she grows up from a kid with onlyfive and a half years’ formal education to a significant documentary writer inmodern times. Growing up, Zhang Yawen has undergone so many hardships andpieces of extraordinary renaissance hovers her of the past. Such “extraordinaryelements” in turn, make her literary works special and charming. This dissertationhas attempted to make a comprehensive and systemic study of her documentaryliteratures from a macro point of view. On such basis, I get some hints from othertypical female documentary writers and take an overview of their literatures inmodern times so as to demonstrate her uniqueness in writing.First and foremost, Zhang Yawen has well combined her serious writingattitude and interviewing skills, reflecting the “solemnity” of a documentarywriter. This “solemnity” is characterized by her first hand experience and seriouswriting attitude. Meanwhile, she focuses on the deep expansion of the writingthemes, cares reality and tends to write the stories of bizarre persons and events.Second, Zhang Yanwen is distinctive in character selection. She departs from herown experience, concerns both the mediocre living on fumes and the noble pursuingspiritual excellence. Most of the protagonists in her works, therefore, have showntheir all-conquering, never-yielding personalities. She focuses her attention, on theone hand, on the unique characteristics of the persons, highlighting their mentaloutlooks based on their marvelous experiences. On the other hand, she is adept atdeepening the characters in the conflict. Ultimately, she continues to exploredifferent text manifestations and takes advantages of cross-stylistic creation. Whilemaintaining the true nature of her narration and learning from the narrative strategyin fictional literature, she utilizes the narrative technique of “multum in parvo”,carefully arranges the structure of the articles and smartly portrays the mental statesof the characters.“Praise” and “exposure” are well coupled in her articles, which make her works more readable and attractive.
