Because of the special identity and the magnificent experience, the resident ministers inforeign countries during the period of late Qing dynasty became the early group of people“who open their eyes to look at the world” in modern China. Though these ministers’ mainaim of visiting western countries is not exploring their industries, they are pretty interested inthe western industry during their visiting period because of their engagement in westernaffairs. They kept down a lot of news and feelings of developing western affairs in theirdiaries and works and sent the information they had collected to China through the method ofmemorials to the emperor and letters. It is no doubt that the spirit these materials carry has adeep influence to the revolution of the late Qing dynasty, especially the development ofindustries.The introduction of this thesis is about the significance of the chosen topic, recentstudies on this topic and the existing problems. This part also concerns the research methodsof this study and the limitations. There are three parts in the main body of this thesis.The first part is about the development of diplomatic mission of the late Qing dynasty.There are two stages, when the Qing dynasty sent ambassadors to western countries, whichare the period from1866to1875, the period of attempt and the period from1875to the1911Revolution, the period of establishment and development. This part also introduces thebackground of diplomatic mission of these two stages appropriately.The second part is about the views of these ambassadors in foreign countries, of whomGuo Songtao and Xue Fucheng are the representatives. This part concludes the main thoughtof these ambassadors through their knowledge of industries, schools, advanced science andtechnology, etc. of western countries.The third part judges the ambassadors’ thoughts on developing industries and thenthrows light on the influence of these thoughts to Chinese industry and their inheritance andpromotion of foreign affairs.In the conclusion, the development processes of these ambassadors’ thought onindustries are clarified, which points out the important place their thoughts have played on theaspect of their acceptance the thought of foreign affairs and development of the thought ofearly reform, deeply influencing the thought of reform of modern China.
