On The Current Situation And Predicament Of Deaf Culture In China

It has been over47years since Stokoe raised "community and culture characteristics of deaf" in1965. The definitions of deaf culture also have no clear conclusion. Supporters’ attitude of deaf culture is clear and unified, that sign language as a first language of the Deaf is the core of deaf culture. And the Deaf is a minority group of culture not disabled.The controversy of deaf culture has cropped up from time to time. Supporters argue that promoting the deaf culture contributes to the formation of groups and cultural tolerance, help to improve status and identity of the Deaf. Opponents argue that promoting it would cause negative effect on rehabilitation and education of deaf children. As the controversy intensified, the predicament in the development of deaf culture exposed.The thesis consists of six parts, focuses on the analysis of different social groups cognition and attitude to deaf culture, recertification the objective existence of deaf culture, to comprehend the status, to discuss dilemma in the development and inheritance of deaf culture. At the end, analyze reasons and put forward some corresponding suggestion.Study one, through the questionnaire survey among Deaf, understanding cognition and attitude of Deaf to deafness, deaf singe language and other deaf culture factors, demonstrating the existence of deaf culture, founding the characteristics of deaf culture development, and giving up suggestions about the dilemma.Study two, through the questionnaire survey among hearing people, looking into their acceptance about deaf culture, and analysis the promotion and hinder of hearing people cognition and attitude to deaf culture. This study reached these two following conclusions.1. Deaf culture is an objective existenceThe same unique lifestyle of deaf community reflects the existence of deaf culture. The unique feature of deaf culture including sign language which is the first language of the Deaf; the deaf-hearing isolation is a common experience for Deaf; attitude and acceptance to deafness is the basic content of deaf culture.2. The development of deaf culture in China is at a low level, the deaf group identity for deaf culture is unsatisfactoryDeaf community in the spiritual and culture level is relatively weak. Because of the complexity of Deaf the culture lack of systematic inheritance. The complexity of Deaf and the mainstream social resistance makes the deaf culture identity more complex.
