The Effect Of Odor On The Individual Moral Judgment

Embodied moral judgment studies found that odor will impact people’s moral judgments, the fresh odor (Citrus air freshener) will increased people’s charity and mutual behavior, rather an unpleasant smell (fart spray) will increase the severity of moral judgment. In other words, the individual’s physical feelings may affect an individual’s moral judgment. However, most of such a metaphor for the relationship between odor and moral judgment in the context of Western culture, therefore, this study attempts to explore in the context of Chinese culture, the olfactory information also can affect the individual’s moral judgment.The study included two experiments to explore that the fresh odor and unpleasant odor affect the difference of individual moral judgment; the fresh odor and unpleasant odor determine the differences of the different nature of ethical issues; the fresh odor and unpleasant odor have the different areas of moral judgment difference. Experimental two-way problem, two major studies of metaphor to explore that watch movie clips induce different moral emotions impact whether it would be the people own behavior.The results show that:(1) the field of moral judgment, the fresh odor and unpleasant odor of moral judgment existed differences. Under the conditions of the fresh odor, for the assessment of four types of moral judgment and control odor conditions compared to the more severely judged unethical behavior in the pure field of moral judgment issues and the injury field of moral judgments issues, the pure field of moral judgment issues and the injury field of moral judgments issues virtue behavior judged no significant differences.(2)Under the conditions of the unpleasant odor, compared with the fresh odor conditions and control odor conditions for the assessment of the four types of moral judgments, the pure field of moral judgment issues and the injury field of moral judgments issues is more severe, and in particular the assessment of the unethical behavior of pure field of moral judgment issues to be significantly higher than the assessment of the injury field of moral judgments issues in unethical behavior. As can be seen, the unpleasant odor aversion induced moral judgments in the pure field of moral judgment issues and the injury field of moral judgments issues more severely, and aversion in different contexts of moral judgment generalization phenomenon exists; rather unpleasant odor evoked anger only in specific the field of moral judgment, and will have an effect on the injury field of moral judgments issues.(3) The different contexts of the nature of the problem of moral judgment, the fresh odor and unpleasant odor of moral judgment differences. Under the conditions of the fresh odor, virtue behavior problems of moral judgment and unethical behavior, and odor control condition assessment is more moral. Under the conditions of the unpleasant odor, virtue behavior and the problem of moral judgment ethical behavior, compared with the fresh odor conditions and control odor conditions assessed to be more immoral.(4) Watching the film clips to induce specific emotion, make sure produce the specific olfactory preferences. Disgust played the significant role on the field of pure moral judgment. Anger played the significant role on the field of injury moral judgment.
