On The Strategies Employed In The C-E Interpretation Of The Chinese Idioms

This paper consists of four parts: the task description, the task process, the caseanalysis and the conclusion. The task description and the task process are the generalintroductions to the interpreting practice; the case analysis is the core part of thispaper, in this part, the author discusses the application of Domestication andForeignization strategies in interpreting Chinese idioms and explores the relatedinterpretation methods.The interpretation of the Chinese idioms is very important for interpreters tomake good performance. Interpreters often encounter Chinese idioms inChinese-English interpretation. Lack of accumulation of knowledge and experiencemay easily disarray the interpreters, thus affecting the quality of the interpretation.The performance of interpreters often becomes the focus when to face Chinese idiomswith cultural features. Handled properly, the interpretation quality would be greatlyincreased and the expression of the spokesman would be accurately conveyed;mishandled, the interpretation would fail to express the tone and words clearly andaccurately.The author chooses President Xi’s keynote speech in2013APEC CEO Summitas the interpreting practice. This paper focuses on the Chinese idioms in his speech,and points out that Domestication and Foreignization strategies can also be used in thepractice of interpretation, however, compared with translation, these strategies have different priorities in interpretation. The author proposes three specific Chineseidioms interpretation methods. Through the recording of the interpretation, this paperanalyzes the specific application of the Domestication and Foreignization strategies inChinese-English interpreting. Finally, this thesis concludes that Domestication andForeignization strategies would help to cope with cultural differences in interpretationencountered in practice. The use of appropriate interpretation methods cansuccessfully complete the task of interpretation and achieve the purpose ofcommunication.
