As the "eye" of the news report, news headlines play a crucial role in news as it offers readers a lot of information at the first glance. Numerous scholars have provided abundant descriptions and analyses on news headlines in order to make them more precise, lively and attractive. All these researches are based on traditional linguistics, translatology and rhetoric. However, the research on the cognitive mechanism contained in news headlines has not been deeply conducted yet.This thesis aims to find out the new root of the comprehension of news headlines for readers and the creation of news headlines for journalists by analyzing the cognitive mechanism involved in news headlines from the cognitive perspective. The author has collected700pieces of online news headlines from The Times and Washington Post and has applied the method of theoretical analysis and quantitative study to forward related statistics and descriptions. Through the analysis, we can see that there are across-space mappings in headlines of news reports. Readers can analyze different headlines according to their operational principles within all the conceptual blending networks and reveal the cognitive mechanism by understanding them. Meanwhile, the theory gives a brand-new angle in the interpretation of the cognitive mechanism in headlines. This study provides enlightenment for the deep understanding and the creation of news headlines, also it offers important references for the further study.
