Metaphor was first proposed as a rhetoric term in Aristotelian time in twothousand years ago. In the book Metaphor We Live By published in1980, Lakoff andJohnson propose the Conceptual Metaphor Theory and point out that metaphor is notonly a rhetorical device but also a way of thinking. A large number of conceptualmetaphors are applied to sports news languages, but the previous study of conceptualmetaphor in sports news is limited, most of the scholars only conduct a research onthe metaphorical expression of A SPORTS GAME IS A WAR. The cognitiveresearch of metaphorical expression in sports news is not comprehensive. The data of this research are sports news headlines collected from the onlinespecial column of2012London Olympic Games. Based on Lakoff’s ConceptualMetaphor Theory as the theoretical framework, this study uses qualitative andquantitative methods to identify, classify and discuss the metaphorical expressionsbetween English and Chinese data. According to Lakoff’s classification of conceptualmetaphor, several metaphorical types are grouped including WAR metaphor,JOURNEY metaphor, DRAMA metaphor, NATURE metaphor, ANIMAL metaphor,TEST metaphor, PLANT metaphor, GHOST metaphor, CONTAINER metaphor,ENTITY metaphor, HUMAN metaphor and UP-DOWN metaphor. In this research the similarities and differences in sports news headlinesbetween these two languages are revealed and the cognitive explanations arediscussed. The author of this thesis finds that, with the similar thinking patterns, physiological basis and living experience, English people and Chinese people will usesimilar metaphorical expressions to describe sports games. However, on the otherhand, due to difference in thinking patterns, values and cultural factors, there are somedifferences between these two languages in metaphorical expressions.
